Light Typography

I first saw this technique a month or so ago on the Dentsu London blog. It’s a method of “extruding” 3D type by moving a an iPhone or iPad across a time lapse exposure. The images I created were made using the iPhone app Holographium. It’s a very simple, nicely designed app that’s good for a night’s worth of photographic experimentation in the dark. Obviously, I chose dorky space terms for the words. I would love to see a more refined version of the typography, and an attempt to make it on a much larger scale. While iPad size is pretty cool, I can envision it 20 feet tall projected in the middle of an urban setting.

Screenshots of Holographium's interface where you can select type, size color and length of exposure.

I imagine that this technique will quickly become design cliche, but it was a lot of fun to create, and Dentsu is pretty brilliant to have come up with the idea. Here is a video they created explaining their process.
